Learning is Scaffolded Construction

چکیده
Standard models of representation as encodings of what is represented yield models of knowledge as banks of such encodings. Learning, in such a view, is the transmission of new encodings into those storage banks in the mind. Technology, therefore, can be a wonderful aid in enhancing the accessibility and transmission of these encoded representations — in enhancing learning as viewed in this model. Every component and every step of this framework, however, is false, beginning with the central presuppositions about the nature of representation. This chapter outlines the fatal critiques of standard encoding models, introduces an alternative model of representation that solves and dissolves these aporia, and shows that this alternative model of representation forces a model of learning as construction, and a functional model of scaffolding that puts scaffolding, selfscaffolding, and the scaffolding of self-scaffolding, at the center of educational aims. This framework places technology at the center of an agentive and social process that participates in and nurtures such scaffolding, rather than just a high bandwidth storage and retrieval device.

A blended model for knowledge communities: embedding scaffolded inquiry
This study investigates a new approach that connects scaffolded inquiry activities within a knowledge building curriculum in secondary school science. We present a blended model that accounts for the flow of ideas within such a curriculum. Using a co-design methodology, researchers collaborated with veteran secondary science teachers to create engaging curriculum that provided the context for t...
متن کاملScientific arguments as learning artifacts: designing for learning from the web with KIE
We designed Knowledge Integration Environment (KIE) debate projects to take advantage of internet resources and promote student understanding of science. Design decisions were guided by the Scaffolded Knowledge Integration instructional framework. We report on design studies that test and elaborate on our instructional framework. Our learning studies assess the arguments students construct usin...
متن کاملCognitive presence in asynchronous online learning: a comparison of four discussion strategies
Some scholars argue that students do not achieve higher level learning, or cognitive presence, in online courses. Online discussion has been proposed to bridge this gap between online and face-to-face learning environments. However, the literature indicates that the conventional approach to online discussion – asking probing questions – does not necessarily advance the discussion through the ph...
متن کاملThe Construction of Causal Schemes: Learning Mechanisms at the Knowledge Level
This work uses microgenetic study of classroom learning to illuminate (1) the role of pre-instructional student knowledge in the construction of normative scientific knowledge, and (2) the learning mechanisms that drive change. Three enactments of an instructional sequence designed to lead to a scientific understanding of thermal equilibration are used as data sources. Only data from a scaffold...
متن کاملScaffolding learners in designing investigation assignments for a computer simulation
This study examined the effect of scaffolding students who learned by designing assignments for a computer simulation on the physics topic of alternating circuits. We compared the students’ assignments and the knowledge acquired in a scaffolded group (N5 23) and a nonscaffolded group (N5 19). The scaffold consisted of a Design Sheet that guided students through the different steps in the design...
